About  Our Department

Our rheumatology specialists are dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of diseases that affect the body’s connective tissues. Our board-certified physicians treat many types of arthritis including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis and osteoarthritis in addition to rare diseases such as SAPHO and FMF. Our experts are also equipped to evaluate and treat regional musculoskeletal disorders such as shoulder, hip and knee pain.

Rheumatic conditions can account for hundreds of different diseases ranging from debilitating and painful joint inflammation to more serious, and sometimes fatal, conditions; early diagnosis and treatment are important due to the complexity of rheumatic diseases. Our experienced clinicians will accurately diagnose these conditions and give you the most effective treatment path with cutting edge therapies. Our goal is to provide you with comfort and reassurance for your long-term health. That is the LSU difference.

Our specialists at the LSU Healthcare Network are national leaders in the field of rheumatology as we focus on rheumatologic and autoimmune research. Our specialists actively participate in basic and clinical research in addition to being involved in training of rheumatology specialists. Our research is comprised of clinical investigations, outcome-measure development and disease-specific rehabilitation services in order to provide the latest and most individualized treatments. Areas of investigation include psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, osteoporosis, uric acid metabolism, cardiovascular effects of rheumatologic disease, inflammatory muscle disease (myositis), systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, pulmonary hypertension, sarcoidosis, and interstitial lung diseases.

The LSU scleroderma and sarcoidosis patient care and research center offers comprehensive multidisciplinary care for patients. This includes combined specialty clinics with rheumatology, pulmonary and cardiology physiciansfor pulmonary fibrosis and for pulmonary hypertension. The center includes specialty care for patients with Systemic Sclerosisin dentistry, gastroenterology, physical / occupational therapyand wound care. The center is an official center of the EUSTAR Collaborative Registry (EULAR Scleroderma Trials and Research),International Scleroderma Network, Pulmonary Hypertension Assessment and Recognition of Outcomes in Scleroderma, Pulmonary Hypertension Association, Scleroderma Clinical Trials Consortium and the World Association of Sarcoidosis and other Granulomatous Disorders.

The hallmark of our care continues to be the strength of our network itself. Rheumatologists routinely must coordinate care with other medical specialists to ensure the patient receives the best treatments for their individual health conditions. The ability to consult with multi-specialty physician teams and view the most up-to-date patient records through our advanced electronic health record systems allows our physicians to offer a comprehensive rheumatology care program.
